At the 2011 ICFF, Wilkhahn?s Chassis Chair which we learned is inspired and produced in the same way sheet metal for cars is stamped out got our attention. It was rare to see a manufacturing process promote a chair, especially one borrowed from another industry. Designboom recently featured two more interesting furniture projects drawing on the auto industry for inspiration.
Benjamin Hubert?s ?Treis? pendant lights are manufactured in an automotive stamping plant out of a single piece of aluminum. The stamping process allows for the sculptural shape of the shade to be created without a seam. The polycarbonate diffuser over the bulb is inspired by the shapes of car headlights.

Konstantin Grcic has created six new aluminum and glass topped tables for an exhibition in Paris which are covered in fictional race car sponsor graphics. The project takes inspiration from Formula 1 cars and sports equipment.
What I particularly like is how the graphics on sports equipment refers to performance, they create the illusion that the object with them is faster or more powerful than the one without.
Grcic collaborated with famed painter Walter Maurer, who assisted Andy Warhol and Frank Stella on their art cars produced for BMW in the 1970?s. Maurer created all of the graphics for the tables with individual coats of lacquer sprayed by hand .
