When we think about the socialization process in schools, it may be worth considering something that happened about a decade ago. Here in the US, there was the Columbine High School killing spree that shocked the nation. Unfortunately this wasn?t an isolated incident, as similar shootings have since taken place. For years, as a result of those incidents, some schools have metal detectors and full-time police presence. So it is difficult to blame any parent for deciding to take positive measures to ensure the safety of their children. There is even less of a potential issue if the homeschooling parent allows their children to participate in various local homeschooling activities.

While children who are taught at home can be just as well socialized as those who go to school, parents have to pay special attention to make sure this is happening. The public school environment exposes children to a usually broad mixture of backgrounds. The typical school in the U.S., for example, is extremely varied in the type of students who attend. Also, interacting with other children allows them to behave, act, experience and receive feedback on their actions.

There is a difference between interacting with siblings and complete strangers. Children can learn a lot by interacting with completely new people from diverse backgrounds.

Maybe you have heard of 4-H clubs, and they have existed for many decades. They offer many clubs for kids to join, based on their interests. And if they?re interested, all of your children can become involved. These clubs are a great way for children to meet and socialize with others and as an added bonus, there?s no cost to join. Children are better able to network than they have previously and this is due in great part to the internet. So, the kids your children meet through 4-H clubs will most likely introduce them to their friends.

Parks in your area offer another option for introducing your children to other kids their age. Team sports are offered by many of these organizations. This approach can bolster the other strategies you use to help your children develop their social skills. This provides a great way for your children to meet others in their age range. And that?s what?s important and the main criticism of homeschooling.

And really, even as adults, we engage in some type of socialization activity every day. As you see your daily errands, you will probably interact with others. There are always chances to help your children hone their social skills. You can provide meaningful experiences in everyday activities such as simply going to the store.
