Pakistan army chief tells US: focus on Afghanistan (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? A parliament member says Pakistan's powerful army chief has advised the U.S. that it should focus its efforts on stabilizing Afghanistan, not pressuring Islamabad.

Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani spoke Tuesday during a rare briefing to two parliamentary defense committees.

The briefing followed increased U.S. pressure on Pakistan to crack down on the Haqqani militant network believed to be based in the country's North Waziristan tribal area along the Afghan border.

One of the defense committee members said Wednesday that Kayani claimed the army could launch a full-scale operation in North Waziristan "tomorrow" if someone convinced him it would stabilize Afghanistan.

The committee member spoke on condition of anonymity because it was a closed-door briefing.
