LUDHIANA: Statue of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi was garlanded by the leaders and workers of District Congress Committee, Urban and Rural, near Mata Rani Chowk here today, on the occasion of the anniversary of Quit India Movement.

Freedom fighters who laid down their lives for freedom of the country were remembered. It was said that these freedom fighters had greatly damaged foundations of the British Rule during the freedom struggle.

Speaking on the occasion, DCC (U) president Pawan Dewan and DCC (Rural) president Malkit Singh Dakha spoke on the importance of the day, and said that Mahatma Gandhi following the path of peace had launched Quit India Movement to get the Nation free from clutches of the Britishers.??They added this movement raised voiced against the British Rule and people from all corners of the country raised voice against Britishers to quit the nation. They said now there was a time to launch a similar movement against the Akalis to leave Punjab, so that the foundations of the SAD-BJP could be eroded. They added East India Company had exploited the Nation at that time and now Badal and Company was exploiting the state. They said the ruling SAD-BJP combine government was following the policy of ?divide and rule? in Punjab. On the other hand, the Congress following the path of secularism had got united the whole nation.

The Congress leaders said the Congress had never back tracked from giving sacrifices. They also reminded sacrifices given by the party leaders such as the then slain chief minister Punjab Beant Singh, adding on the other side the Akalis had never sacrificed for the country?s unity and integrity. They alleged that instead the Akalis were sheltering various mafia groups in Punjab for their vested gains.

Among others, the leader of opposition in MC House Hemraj Aggarwal, and other leaders including Parminder Mehta, Jarnail Singh Shimlapuri, Navnish Malhotra, Gurmukh Singh Mithu, Sunny Kainth, GS Mand, Tikshan Mehta, Himanshu Walia, Ravinder Arora, Deepak Hans, Mahavir Praasad, Madan Lal Madhu, VK Arora, Surinder Sharma, Pardeep Sharma and Ram Singh were present.
