Erykah Badu?s first hit single ?On and On? inspired the title of this week?s column.?
First, a shout out to the people who came out to ?The Music Beat? launch party last Tuesday, June 23, at the Flagship?s Blue Water Grille in A.C. We had a drawing for tickets to see Jamie Foxx at Caesars on Friday, July 1, and Erykah Badu at the House of Blues at Showboat on July 2. I?d also like to shout out the good people at the Trump Taj Mahal for bringing in Sade to town during one of her rare American tours.?
My first ?Music Beat Pick of the Week? goes to all local 21st century hip-hop supporters. A local promoter, Greg ?New Bomb? Newsome, is bringing the Atlantic City Summerfest to Bernie Robbins (formerly Sandcastle) Stadium. The Summerfest is bringing to town some of hip-hop?s most successful artists of the past five years including Rick Ross, who just a year ago had the summer?s anthem ?BMF (Blowin? Money Fast).? Beanie Sigel is also on the bill. Sigel hails from Philly and if you?re familiar with Will ?the Fresh Prince? Smith, just think of a successful rapper who is basically Smith?s total opposite. ?
Sigel?s music deals with street life and what success is like for MCs who haven?t gone Hollywood. Meek Mill is another Philly MC on the ticket, who has basically made his noise in the hip-hop underground. With solid lyrics, the people who know Meek will like his show and I think people who are introduced to him for the first time at Summerfest will appreciate his skills. ?
Rounding out the headliners for Summerfest is Jim Jones, now a solo artist, who started with the popular hip-hop crew Dip Set. Jones, like all the artists on the ticket, is known for songs about cars, women, the fast life and the street. Jones, however, in 2006 had almost every club and pimped-out ride playing his hit ?We Fly High (Ballin?).? Likewise his ?Jump Shot? dance was the most popular movement to hit music since Fat Joe?s ?Lean Back/Rock-a-Way.??
Tickets for Summerfest can be purchased at ticketweb.com.?
Music Beat Pick #2 ? Catherine Boyd at the Bloom Pavilion in Margate for the second annual Coffee House and Art Show. Boyd, who is one half of the duo Blondage Rocks!, will be playing her violin at the event Thursday and Friday, June 30-July 1, from 6-9pm. Boyd?s husband will have his artwork on display. All in all, it should be a fun night.?
Music Beat Pick #3 ? Atlantic City Weekly editor Jeff Schwachter has an art show ? ?Jazz Portraits? ? of musically inspired oil-pastel drawings at the African-American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey in Newtonville. The exhibit is free to see, but donations to the museum are encouraged. Included in the collection of jazz-inspired pieces is a one-of-a-kind portrait of the late Gil Scott-Heron, as well as 25 other drawings (and one painting) of artists ranging from Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Thelonius Monk, to Henry Threadgill, Archie Shepp and Eric Dolphy.?
Music Beat?s ?Next Artist? ? JOMO Lyles-Belton may not be a name you recognize yet, and you may not have his CD in your collection, but that is about to change. JOMO is not just another MC from Atlantic City. He came out to ?Music Beat Tuesday? at the Flagship last Tuesday and staked his claim.?
JOMO injected hot lyrics over several tracks that I mixed in (I was on DJ duty at the time) and rocked a crowd of adults who had come to hear acoustic music, rock, soul and spoken-word artists perform. JOMO?s plan is, however, bigger, as he will be shooting a music video for his single ?So Ole School? later this month. You can check out his music at reverbnation.com/jomo23. ?
My ears are open 24 hours a day, so shoot me an e-mail at Rtyler@acweekly.com. Each ?Music Beat? column will have a song title/theme, so send me a suggestion for a song title, the name of the artist(s) and why you like the song and you will win an un-prize ? a shout out from me in this column. I am also looking for new music of all genres to profile in the local music scene column (local country music artists, where are you?). You can come out to ?Music Beat Tuesday? at the Flagship?s Blue Water Grille and meet me personally, and you should also create a free music page for your band or solo act in the AC Weekly ?Local Music Guide? at acweekly.com/localmusic.
