Notepads are awesome, but sometimes you need to just jot down a quick one or two line note that doesn't need to be saved. Software developer Jose Jesus Perez Aguinaga shares a simple way to do it in any browser.
All you need to do is type the following code into the browser's URL bar:
data:text/html, <html contenteditable>
Hit Enter, and start typing away directly in your browser window. The reason this works is that it uses the Data URI scheme to make a simple HTML page with the element, "contenteditable." If you decide you want to save it, you can do so in your browser and it will save as an HTML file. Otherwise, it's a fantastic little place to dump ideas that pop into your head that you don't need saved in an actual notepad. Of course, you don't have to remember the little line of code, you can enter it into your text expander for easy access, or just make it a bookmark. Head over to Aguinaga's site below and dig through the comments for a bunch of modifiers to the code to change the background, text size, and more.

LONDON (AP) ? An unexpectedly-weak U.S. consumer confidence survey Tuesday failed to dent the positive tone in markets in the run-up to a series of key U.S. economic indicators.
Markets remained higher despite a soft reading from the Conference Board survey of consumer optimism. Its monthly index fell to 58.6 points, its lowest level since November 2011, amid concerns over U.S. politicians' ability to agree on a budget.
But many analysts brushed off the survey as a potential one-off, arguing the drop was due to an increase in the payroll tax agreed at the start of the year between the White House and Congress.
"Smaller paychecks are hurting consumer confidence but higher home and equity values, and eventually stronger job growth, should help buffer the pain," said Jennifer Lee, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares rose 0.7 percent to close at 6,339.19, while Germany's DAX gained 0.2 percent to 7,848.57. The CAC-40 in France rose 0.1 percent to 3,785.82.
In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.4 percent at 13,938.61 while the broader S&P 500 index rose 0.3 percent to 1,504.82.
Markets are likely to be at the mercy of U.S. economic indicators for the rest of the week. Many stock indexes around the world have hit multi-year highs and the Dow Jones industrial average is not far off its all-time peak, achieved in 2007 just before the financial crisis started baring its teeth.
One of the reasons why markets have enjoyed such a strong start to the year is optimism over the U.S. economy. Over the coming days, investors will be inundated with a raft of figures, culminating on Friday with the monthly nonfarm payrolls report for January. The payrolls figures often provide the markets direction for a week or two after their release.
There's a lot to get through before Friday, though, most notably on Wednesday when the U.S. Federal Reserve concludes its latest two-day policy meeting. At their last meeting, there were signs that some rate-setters were poised to bring an end to the era of super-loose monetary policy.
"The Fed statement tomorrow is likely to be the most eagerly anticipated news of the week," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor.
Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.4 percent to 10,866.72 but Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped less than 0.1 percent to 23,655.17.
Japanese banks surged on expectations they will beat earnings for the fiscal year 2012, the Nikkei newspaper reported. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group advanced 3.8 percent. Mizuho Financial Group gained 2.9 percent and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group rose 4.4 percent.
The positive tone was evident in other markets, too, with the euro 0.2 percent higher at $1.3478. In the oil markets, the price for a barrel of crude was $1.18 higher at $97.62 in New York.

CROMWELL >> Mounting legal bills are becoming an increasing concern for both the finance director and the Board of Finance.
During the finance board?s regular monthly meeting Thursday, Director of Finance Marianne Sylvester said, ?When you look at the last six months, we may need to do a transfer.?
The line item for the town attorney for labor negotiations ?took a hit in the first six months? of the 2012-13 fiscal year, which began on July 1, Sylvester said.
In those first six months, the town was, among other things, working to settle three outstanding grievance appeals that had carried over from the 2011-12 fiscal year, Sylvester said.
Those grievances have been resolved. And ?the bills we received for December were significantly lower,? Sylvester told the board.
The town this year allocated $75,000 for labor relations, Sylvester said. The money is paid to the firm of Kainen, Escalera & McHale.
While the labor relations bills appear to be moderating, the fees paid to the town attorney are averaging approximately $10,000 a month, Sylvester said.
The town has budgeted $100,000 for legal fees for the current fiscal year, Sylvester said. Those bills are paid to the firm of Murtha Cullina.
But if those bills continue to come in at or around $10,000 a month, the yearly allocation will be exceeded and the board will have to allocate additional funds, Sylvester said.
?Hopefully, the (supplemental appropriation) will not exceed $40,000,? Sylvester said. Continued...
During virtually every board meeting, finance board member Julius C. Neto expresses his concern about the steady growth in legal fees. The trend line for legal fees has been growing consistently over the past five to 10 years, Neto said.
Neto regularly punctuates his remarks about escalating legal fees with a gentle rise of his right hand, mimicking the motion an airplane makes as it climbs into the sky.
But Neto?s chief concern is the hard landing that could await the town if the growth in legal fees is not stabilized.
?Do we have a plan to try and manage these legal expenses?? he asked Sylvester Thursday.
?We will probably see a little savings in the medical insurance line item,? Sylvester said, ?so we should be able to absorb (the overage in legal fees) in our operating budget.?
?We?re on a slippery slope,? Neto said. ?We are projecting year-after-year increases, it just seems to me.?
?Attorney?s fees are very expensive. And they could become a runaway train if we can?t find a way to manage our expenses,? Neto said.
?The last five to 10 years, legal expenses have become like health insurance,? Neto said.
The reference to health insurance provided an opening for Sylvester to make a well-timed ? and well-delivered - humorous remark.
?We have a wellness program for health insurance,? Sylvester said. ?Maybe we need a wellness program for our legal expenses.? Continued...
The remark drew appreciative laughs from Neto and his fellow board members.
But even as he enjoyed Sylvester?s bon mot, Neto remained focused on the larger issue, however.
?We have to find a way not to request the attorney?s opinion. Are we going to the attorney on the first day? (The director of) human resources (HR) can deal with some of these issues? without automatically referring them to the town attorney, Neto suggested.
?HR does try to deal with many situations without referring them to the town attorney,? Sylvester said. ?But a lot of these (issues) are grievances that have escalated.?
?This is just one area; I?m not trying to pick on HR,? Neto said.
Finance board Chairwoman Loraine Caruso said she shared many of Neto?s concerns.
Board member Joe Corlis suggested the town ?try more mediation instead of going to court.?
?A lot of our legal efforts are (undertaken) to protect the town,? Sylvester said.
That said, Sylvester acknowledged, ?There is a balance we need to find.?

LONDON (Reuters) - A number of Barclays current and past executives are on a shortlist of individuals named in regulatory documents referring to the bank's attempted rigging of global benchmark interest rates, court documents released on Friday showed.
The list includes the head of Barclays' investment bank, Rich Ricci, who has led a reputation-based review of all of Barclays' investment banking activities following the scandal, which saw the bank fined $453 million by United States and British authorities.
The list also includes finance director Chris Lucas, former Chief Executive Bob Diamond, former chief operating officer Jerry del Missier, and former compliance head Stephen Morse.
A British judge ordered the bank to reveal their identities during a preliminary hearing for a test case on the mis-selling of interest rate swaps brought by a residential care home operator.
A longer list of 104 individuals who were named in court papers was released on Thursday after the judge denied their request for anonymity. The shorter list of 25, released on Friday, names those specifically referred to in regulatory documents referring to Libor manipulation.
Twenty-four of the 25 had requested anonymity - the exception being former Barclays trader Jay Merchant, who went on to become head of swaps trading at UBS before leaving his position last August amid federal scrutiny of his activities while at Barclays.
None of those named is necessarily implicated in any wrongdoing.
Guardian Care Homes alleges Barclays mis-sold interest rate hedging products based on Libor (London interbank offered rate) in a case that is shining a light on those involved in the bank's interest rate-setting process.
Apogee wants bring pro audio interfaces to the mobile realm. To that end, it's coming to NAMM with a trio of options that cover most Apple-bound musicians and podcasters. Its next-generation One interface (seen after the break) can take simultaneous input from both a built-in condenser mic and one device plugged into either an XLR or quarter-inch jack, passing along the resulting tunes to an iOS device or a Mac's USB port. A similarly reworked Duet adds direct iOS connections to the two-input, four-output Duet (above). Full-fledged bands aren't left out of the equation, either -- the existing, four-input Quartet has received iPad support without changing its formula. Lighting-based iOS gear unfortunately requires an adapter, but we'll take consolation in a new Maestro app for iPads that offers control over connections and session monitoring. Producers hoping for more mobility can pick up the Duet or Quartet in February at their respective $595 and $1,295 prices, although they'll have to wait until March to buy the One at $349.

Twitter took Vine under its wing late last year, and it looks like that new relationship is bearing its first fruit. Earlier today, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo revealed Vine's new capabilities with a single tweet earlier today with a Vine video embedded. Like Twitter's card implementation, the video appears as a link in the tweet, and users need only click the "View media" (instead of "Show summary") link underneath for that tweet to expand and show the embedded vid. Once played, the clip loops until you tell it to stop. The video Costolo shared is only a few seconds long, so we don't know if there's a time limit for embedded Vine videos, nor can we say when the rest of us will be able to start using Vine. However, we can surely point you to the source to see the service in action.
President Barack Obama has supporters among some of the most popular pop musicians around, and they showed up in full force during his inaugural weekend. From Beyonce performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the morning's ceremony to Alicia Keys singing "Obama's on Fire" -- a twist on her hit "Girl on Fire" -- at the Inaugural Ball, the first couple was honored by some amazing renditions of classics and new favorites alike.
A year ago, the $49.99 HTC One VX for AT&T would've been a top-of-the-line superphone. Today it's just a beautiful smartphone?with solid specs and a budget price. The HTC One VX gets you a lovely display, plenty of power, and good battery life, all wrapped up in a phone that's very comfortable to use. Thing is, there are so many good phones out there right now that the HTC One VX isn't quite good enough unseat the Pantech Discover, our current Editors' Choice for budget smartphones.
Design and Call Quality The HTC One VX may be inexpensive, but it looks like a million bucks. HTC's eye for design is on full display here, from the silver plastic rim around the display, to the matte white polycarbonate backing. Peeling it off gives you access to the microSD and SIM card slots, but alas, the 1800mAh battery has been sealed in. There's a volume rocker on the right side of the phone and a power button on top, but minimalism is the name of the game here.
The One VX measures 5.26 by 2.66 by 0.36 inches (HWD) and weighs just 4.37 ounces. Compared to many of the gargantuan new smartphones out there, it fits comfortably and naturally in the palm of my hand.
The 4.5-inch Super LCD 2 screen features 960-by-540-pixel resolution. It's bright and sharp, though not quite as impressive as the 4.8-inch, 720p display on the Pantech Flex. Still, the One VX is easier to hold. There are haptic feedback-enabled touch buttons beneath the display, which I find a little easier to use than the onscreen buttons on many new phones.
The One VX runs on AT&T's EDGE, HSPA+, and LTE networks. You also get 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, which includes support for the faster 5GHz band. I got very good reception and LTE data speeds in New York City, which has been true for most new AT&T phones. As we discovered in our?Fastest Mobile Networks?survey, AT&T's LTE speeds can exceed Verizon's, though Verizon and covers more of the nation. You can use the One VX as a mobile hotspot as long as you're using (at minimum) AT&T's $50 monthly 5GB data plan.
Call quality is pretty good. Voices sound full in the earpiece, though there's some fuzz and hiss. Calls made with the phone are very loud and clear, with average noise cancellation. Calls were fine through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and standard Android voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. The speakerphone sounds good and is loud enough to hear outside. The 1800mAh battery was good for a whopping 14 hours and 21 minutes of talk time.
Hardware, Android, and Apps Inside, the One VX is running on a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8930 processor. That isn't quite as fast as the 1.5GHz chip in phones like the Pantech Flex and Samsung Galaxy S III. But the One VX has a lower screen resolution, so it evened out in many of our gaming benchmarks, though the Flex is faster for browsing and in general. Still, at this level of processing power, you'll be able to run any app from the Google Play app store.
The One VX is running Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is a little disappointing, since other new HTC phones like the One X+ are running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). HTC promises an update, but as usual, there's no timeline for when. You also get HTC's Sense 4.1 overlay, which is a step behind Sense 4+, though it's similar enough.
Jan. 20, 2013 ? Biotechnologists have been working hard to address the climate change and limited fossil resource issues through the development of sustainable processes for the production of chemicals, fuels and materials from renewable non-food biomass. One promising sustainable technology is the use of microbial cell factories for the efficient production of desired chemicals and materials.
When microorganisms are isolated from nature, the performance in producing our desired product is rather poor. Metabolic engineering is performed to improve the metabolic and cellular characteristics to achieve enhanced production of desired product at high yield and productivity. Since the performance of microbial cell factory is very important in lowering the overall production cost of the bioprocess, many different strategies and tools have been developed for the metabolic engineering of microorganisms.
One of the big challenges in metabolic engineering is to find the best platform organism and to find those genes to be engineered so as to maximize the production efficiency of the desired chemical. Even Escherichia coli, the most widely utilized simple microorganism, has thousands of genes, the expression of which is highly regulated and interconnected to finely control cellular and metabolic activities. Thus, the complexity of cellular genetic interactions is beyond our intuition and thus it is very difficult to find effective target genes to engineer. Together with gene amplification strategy, gene knockout strategy has been an essential tool in metabolic engineering to redirect the pathway fluxes toward our desired product formation.
However, experiment to engineer many genes can be rather difficult due to the time and effort required; for example, gene deletion experiment can take a few weeks depending on the microorganisms. Furthermore, as certain genes are essential or play important roles for the survival of a microorganism, gene knockout experiments cannot be performed. Even worse, there are many different microbial strains one can employ. There are more than 50 different E. coli strains that metabolic engineer can consider to use. Since gene knockout experiment is hard-coded (that is, one should repeat the gene knockout experiments for each strain), the result cannot be easily transferred from one strain to another.
A paper published in Nature Biotechnology online January 20 addresses this issue and suggests a new strategy for identifying gene targets to be knocked out or knocked down through the use of synthetic small RNA. A Korean research team led by Distinguished Professor Sang Yup Lee at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), reported that synthetic small RNA can be employed for finely controlling the expression levels of multiple genes at the translation level. Already well-known for their systems metabolic engineering strategies, Professor Lee's team added one more strategy to efficiently develop microbial cell factories for the production of chemicals and materials.
Gene expression works like this: the hard-coded blueprint (DNA) is transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA), and the coding information in mRNA is read to produce protein by ribosomes. Conventional genetic engineering approaches have often targeted modification of the blueprint itself (DNA) to alter organism's physiological characteristics. Again, engineering the blueprint itself takes much time and effort, and in addition, the results obtained cannot be transferred to another organism without repeating the whole set of experiments. This is why Professor Lee and his colleagues aimed at controlling the gene expression level at the translation stage through the use of synthetic small RNA. They created novel RNAs that can regulate the translation of multiple messenger RNAs (mRNA), and consequently varying the expression levels of multiple genes at the same time. Briefly, synthetic regulatory RNAs interrupt gene expression process from DNA to protein by destroying the messenger RNAs to different yet controllable extents. The advantages of taking this strategy of employing synthetic small regulatory RNAs include simple, easy and high-throughput identification of gene knockout or knockdown targets, fine control of gene expression levels, transferability to many different host strains, and possibility of identifying those gene targets that are essential.
As proof-of-concept demonstration of the usefulness of this strategy, Professor Lee and his colleagues applied it to develop engineered E. coli strains capable of producing an aromatic amino acid tyrosine, which is used for stress symptom relief, food supplements, and precursor for many drugs. They examined a large number of genes in multiple E. coli strains, and developed a highly efficient tyrosine producer. Also, they were able to show that this strategy can be employed to an already metabolically engineered E. coli strain for further improvement by demonstrating the development of highly efficient producer of cadaverine, an important platform chemical for nylon in the chemical industry.
This new strategy, being simple yet very powerful for systems metabolic engineering, is thus expected to facilitate the efficient development of microbial cell factories capable of producing chemicals, fuels and materials from renewable biomass.

Vatican City: Dogs, cats, parrots and farm animals gathered at the Vatican and churches across Spain on Thursday to be blessed on the feast day of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals.
Donkeys, pigs, cows and chickens bayed and clucked in St. Peter?s Square, as Cardinal Angelo Comastri, general vicar for the Vatican, gave his yearly blessing to all God?s creatures.
?We?ve always had dogs, it?s time to get them baptised!? said a cheerful Federica Veneto.
Bemused looking sheep were kept away from overly enthusiastic dogs as dozens of horses with their manes braided pranced up the via della Conciliazione ? the main street leading to the Vatican ? ridden by police officers or leading colourful horse-drawn carriages.
A group of Italian vets stood by offering free check-ups for doted-upon pets.

In Madrid, animal lovers lined up outside the main entrance to the Church of San Anton with their pets on leashes or wrapped in blankets in their arms as they waited for a priest to sprinkle the animals with holy water.
?Many dressed their dogs in their finest for the occasion, decking them in coats to guard against the cold or tying bows in their fur.
Jose Martinez, 74, dressed his blonde cocker spaniel Poki in a scarf in the yellow and red colours of the Spanish flag and a grey sweater.
?We brought him here to be blessed to see if he becomes less naughty,? he said, standing in the queue while his pet barked at other dogs waiting nearby.
Dogs were the most numerous species but rabbits, hamsters, canaries and other birds were also blessed.

Lucia Perez tried in vain to get her grey and white parrot Ursi, wrapped in a green blanket, to say hello as she waited for her turn.
?I come almost every year. We are very pleased with her and want her to have a long life,? the 57-year-old said before kissing the bird?s beak.
?Nearby the line of faithful waiting to present their pets to be blessed, another queue formed outside a separate church door to buy buns.
They are traditionally kept alongside a coin in a cupboard to be eaten on the feast of Saint Anthony the following year to ensure good health and to gain the blessing of the saint.
The buns are baked according to a secret recipe meant to keep them soft for longer.
Pets and their owners, police dogs and guide dogs for the blind could be seen marching through the streets around the church in the afternoon.
A woman takes her dog to be blessed at San Anton church in Madrid on Saint Anthony?s Day, on January 17, 2013 ? AFP Pedro Armestre
The church celebrated several masses throughout the day in honour of Saint Anthony, with dogs sitting in the pews or on the church floor alongside their owners.
?We come every year because it is traditional and it is beautiful,? said Mario Perez Blanco, 57, who brought his seven-year-old labrador retriever Gaspar to be blessed.
The festival has been celebrated in Madrid largely uninterrupted since the 19th century. It is also held in other parts of Spain such as the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the northern city of Burgos.
Animals are said to have been instinctively drawn to Saint Anthony throughout his life. Anthony, who was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195, is often depicted addressing a menagerie of animals attentively listening to his words.
