Now, I'm fully aware that Sharper Image isn't a company known for computing prowess. It's more of an entity that specializes in innovative-cum-gimmicky items ranging from foot massagers to automatic tie racks. This lack of focus is apparent with the cooling station. It's a hastily sketched out idea that tries to perform more than one function and winds up doing none of them adequately.

Design
The Sharper Image Cooling Station is constructed out of flimsy plastic and comes in a silver finish. As a mini keyboard, its size is nearly identical as the Evoluent Essentials Full Featured Compact Keyboard (EKB) ($49.95 direct, 3.5 stars). There's also a touchpad beneath the keyboard which, despite its superficial similarity to the MacBook's touchpad, does not feature any multi-touch capabilities, like two-finger scrolling.

But before you actually mount your laptop onto this thing, you'll notice a few features on the upper half, namely three horizontally arranged cooling fans that the Cooling Station owes its namesake to. There's a rectangular flap beneath the fans that you push out so it sits obliquely on an adjustable plastic panel behind the system, sort of like a picture frame; adjusting the flap's tilt in turn alters the viewing angle of the laptop screen. There's a removable plastic window to the left of the flap that opens up to reveal a built-in USB 2.0 cable that powers the Cooling System's fans.

To the left of the keyboard are three additional ports: there's a micro USB port for connecting the keyboard and touchpad to your laptop (via the included USB 2.0 cable), as well as two available USB 2.0 ports for connecting additional peripherals. Annoyingly, the micro USB port and the built-in USB cable are both located on the Cooling Station's left side, so if there aren't any USB ports on the left side of your laptop, it'll take some patience and creativity to hook the Cooling System to your Laptop; this problem is exacerbated by the fact that both the included USB cable and the built-in cable are only 21 inches long and, consequently, offer very little slack.

Lighting Science Group?s LED Lights Illuminate the Washington D.C. Streets

The previous old, inefficient lights were replaced with highly-durable and ultra-efficient street lights from Lighting Science Group, thereby reducing the District's annual carbon dioxide emissions by 719 T and making the D.C. area more sustainable.

DDOT, along with Howard University Transportation Research Center, conducted an analysis of light emitting diode (LED) lighting products, from large number of various producers and vendors, before initiating this project. As part of the study, efficacy, photometric readings, fixture life, color temperature, dimmability and compatibility with remote monitoring and control systems, and aesthetics were evaluated. The study came to a conclusion with the selection of Lighting Science Group's PROLIFIC (LSG) LSR-2 LED Street light as the favored choice by DDOT to replace the existing alley lights across the District.

LSG?s CEO and Chairman, Jim Haworth says that smart infrastructure-based city planning is found to be safe as well as cost-effective. DDOT and DDOE, jointly with the Mayor's office, anticipate promoting financial as well as safety interests among their District residents through their united passion for a sustainable D.C. LSG?s PROLIFIC Series roadway solutions provide extensive lifetime compared to the existing lights. In addition, it will minimize both maintenance and energy costs. The new LED street lights from LSG provide enhanced illumination at less cost. With its bright color and uniformity, it serves to be a revolutionary lighting for the District.

Under the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Efficient and Conservation Block Grant program, DDOE granted funds for this the LED lighting project. Also, DDOT will install high-efficacy light fixtures across D.C.

GOP kills civil unions in Colorado special session

DENVER, Colo.?? A last-ditch effort by Colorado's governor to give gay couples in the state rights similar to married couples failed Monday after Republicans rejected the proposal during a special legislative session.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper had said the special session was needed to address a "fundamental question of fairness and civil rights."

The bill's demise was expected by Democrats, who have begun using the issue as a rallying cry to topple Republicans in the November elections. Republicans assigned the bill to House State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, which was likely to reject it. The panel voted 5-4 along party lines to kill the measure.

"The gay community is being used as a political pawn," said Republican Rep. Don Coram, whose son is gay. Coram voted against the measure.

Rep. Mark Ferrandino, the Democrats' leader in the House and gay lawmaker co-sponsoring civil unions, sounded a note of optimism before the committee hearing, even as he braced for the bill's rejection.

"If it fails this year, we're going to work hard to make sure the public understands what happened, the games that were played, and next we're going to push it again," he said. "And as I've said a number of times, it's not a matter of 'if,' it's a matter of 'when.' And the 'when' keeps getting sooner and sooner. This will happen."

House Republicans hold a 33-32 voting advantage, but there was enough support for civil unions to pass.

Last week, Democrats tried to force Republicans who control the calendar to bring up the bill for debate. But it became clear Republicans were filibustering by unnecessarily talking at length about other bills.

Republicans then halted work for hours, killing the bill and several others that needed a vote before a key deadline.

"Transparency, accountability and the virtues of good government are compromised when the legislative clock is used to avoid consideration of important legislation," the governor said in a letter to lawmakers before the special session started.

The regular session adjourned Wednesday, the same day an emotional Hickenlooper announced his intent to call a special session over civil unions and other bills that died because of the GOP filibuster.

More than a dozen states allow either gay marriage or civil unions, including several that moved to pass such laws this year.

The debate in Colorado is playing out at a time when President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to publicly endorse gay marriage. But North Carolina voters approved a constitutional amendment that bars civil unions and defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

Earlier Monday, hundreds of supporters wearing red and waving signs greeted lawmakers returning to Denver for the special session.

Many of the gay-rights activists predicted the bill's demise. They urged Democrats to make the civil unions failure a rallying point for November.

"For too long Democrats have let the right corner the market no talking about values. Finally we've claimed the moral high ground, and we can talk about that," said activist Wiley Sherer, who was selling buttons that read, "Ignorance is forgivable. Pride in ignorance never is."

Undeterred by the civil unions delay, Sherer said, "It's going to happen eventually. I mean, there's no way in 10 years we don't have nationwide marriage equality."

Conservatives, who argue civil unions undermine traditional marriage, portrayed the special session as a waste of taxpayer money. As they have before, Republicans described the measure as a proposal for gay marriage, rather than civil unions.

Civil unions would grant gay couples rights similar to married couples, including letting partners make medical decisions for each other. The protections also would enhance parental and inheritance rights.

Panasonic's yearly earnings are in and the red ink added up to a record $9.7 billion net loss for 2011. Number one on incoming president Kazuhiro Tsuga's list is turning around the company's TV division, where its heavy investments in both plasma and LCD manufacturing resulted in heavy losses. Currently the company expects a better result in both next year after 2011's write downs and restructuring, although its projections see total sales falling from 17.3 million last year to 15.5 million. Panasonic is expected to follow Samsung and LG into large screen OLED HDTV production and outgoing prez Fumio Ohtsubo mentioned it would likely look for a partner there. Sumitomo has been rumored as a potential ally in the past, though a preference for run-flat tires could not be confirmed at press time.

The first generation of O2O commerce was driven by discounting, push-based engagements, and artificial scarcity. The still-unfulfilled opportunity in O2O today is tantamount to tacking barcodes onto un-warehousable services by standardizing and normalizing the units being sold, something I call "Service as a SKU." Just as Amazon figured out how to build the best warehouses and technology in the world for delivering boxes, somebody will do this for "unboxed" services, with customers driven not by discounts or scarcity, but rather by the Internet?s hallmarks of customer experience and convenience. And unlike how "ship stuff in a box" ecommerce seems to be gravitating towards a few winners, Service as a SKU is still a wide open playing field.

From the Editor's Desk: A slow CTIA, whose app is it anyway, the EVO 4G LTE isn't as bad as you thought, eh?

Two thirds of these guys busted their butts at CTIA in New Orleans. One of them was not me.

Another CTIA has come and gone. I'm not usually one to gripe about the pace of a show, given that at these things we're essentially on a working vacation in cool city. But this spring's CTIA was pretty meh. The biggest announcement was, what, Verizon's Droid Incredible 4G LTE? Not an unimportant phone, I suppose, and it should sell just fine. But while Sprint and AT&T and T-Mobile are rocking phones from the new-and-improved HTC One line, with much-improved cameras, Verizon's missing out.

Samsung missed a pretty big opportunity in New Orleans, too. Not even a week after it unveiled the Galaxy S III to a worldwide (or at least European) audience in London, Sammy squandered a great chance to get the U.S. even more excited about it, and to get CTIA attendees (mostly of the American variety, we wager) proper looks at the new flagship phone. Strike while the iron is hot, they say.

Of course, the U.S. carriers will put their own spin on the Galaxy S III. And it's pretty likely that we'll see some sort of event to show them off, just like what we had with the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II. But it was pretty surprising to see a minimal showing from Samsung here in New Orleans. No both. Just a brief appearance at the Mobile Focus event, where journos and companies cram into a ballroom for food, drink and a slightly more intimate look at products than on the show proper. The Galaxy S III is an important phone that was mostly kept off the floor, and that's a shame. Good thing we went to London to get a proper introduction. (By the way, if you haven't read Alex Dobie's piece -- "Hype, expectation an the Galaxy S III" -- you've missed out.)

The roundtable keynote featuring the CEOs of Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, moderated by CNBC's Jim Cramer, was entertaining if not overly substantive. (It also went a bit long, with each of the four's intro remarks taking more time than many of us would have preferred.) But Sprint CEO Dan Hesse hit home a little bit with a renewed push for mobile privacy, security and safety. Those are three things that will only become more important in the coming years. The Sprint Guardian program, which covers all applicable lines on an account for a relatively small fee, should be an interesting way of going about it.

Otherwise, no real showstopping announcements. No real major releases. Will CTIA in the fall (back in San Diego) make up for it? Or is the usefulness of trade shows starting to run its course for manufacturers?

Oh, by the way. Those two guys in the picture above -- Jared "The Body" DiPane and Anndrew "Yes that's how it's spelled" Vacca kicked some serious ass last week. Cheers, boys.
