Google reCAPTCHAs now featuring Street View addresses, 221b Baker St. to get even more famous

If you've enjoyed decrypting the often frustratingly skewed (and occasionally humorously juxtaposed) reCAPTCHAs, you might be a bit sad to learn that Google is mixing things up with some rather more boring numerals. The combinations of two words are typically used as part of a registration form to ensure the registrant is, indeed, human. Google is now replacing one of the words in some of its reCAPTCHA forms with photos gleaned from Street View service. Google says it uses these numbers internally to improve the accuracy of Street View and that pulling them into reCAPTCHAs is part of an "experiment" to "determine if using imagery might also be an effective way to further refine our tools for fighting machine and bot-related abuse online."

In other words, Google's bots are already capable of decoding these numbers, which makes this all sound like a bit of a challenge to the rest of the OCR-loving coders in the world. Any takers?

Niche dating sites crop up all the time. Now, one that launched to cater to the kind of people who grow crops?FarmersOnly.com?has reached a milestone.

Jerry Miller, a marketing executive who founded the site in 2005 after a divorced farm owner complained to him about a lack of like-minded people in her dating pool, says it has more than 200,000 subscribers.

"She said, 'I'm afraid I'm not going to meet anybody new?I know everybody in town,'" Miller recalled in a recent interview with Yahoo News.

He then spent six months researching singles in farming communities. "I kept hearing the same thing: 'I know everybody in my church, everybody at the store, but I go on these big dating sites, and they just don't understand the lifestyle.'"

Carrying the tagline "city folks just don't get it," FarmersOnly.com launched with about 2,000 members, but grew to more than 100,000 users by 2010 as nonfarmers embraced the sensibility.

"You don't have to be a farmer," Miller, who's based in Cleveland, said. "You could work at a restaurant, or the feed store, but are looking for someone who has those values."

Users pay $15.95 per month, or $49.95 for six months, to find a like-minded match on the service. (Online dating is a billion-dollar industry: More 40 million Americans used an online dating service in 2011.)

Miller's done some marketing at farm shows and local television ads (like the one with talking animals below), but said the steady rise has been mainly from word-of-mouth.

FarmersOnly, which boasts members from all 50 states, has pockets of urban users, too. "They grew up in the country and dream of moving back to country," he said. "Dreamers that want to get out."

Instead of asking what your astrological sign is, at FarmersOnly.com we ask if you raise or breed alpacas, horses, cattle, chickens, dogs, goats, rabbits, sheep, grow crops, or if you're an organic farmer, student farmer, cowboy, cowgirl, or just a farmer wanna be!

The most challenging part of growing its user base, Miller said, is showing people the ropes.

"The learning curve is a lot different for us," Miller said. "I spent thousands of hours coaching people on how to use the site, send messages?even just teaching them how to upload their photos." (One user, Lyle from Kansas, would call him often, saying, "Jerry, I'm looking at my photo, I just can't figure out how to get it on there.")

The site also had to wait for technology to catch up in rural towns, too. "When we launched, everybody had phone modems," Miller said. "Connections were slow, so we had to keep it simple."

There are plenty of success stories about married couples that met on FarmersOnly, something in which Miller?who got married long before the Internet came along?takes extra pride.

"Lots of these people are really, really lonely," Miller said. "When you walk outside in New York, there are 10,000 people within three blocks. In some of these rural towns, there are three people within 10 miles. It's a whole different ballgame."

"The Hunger Games" beat all of the "Twilight Saga" movies and every single non-sequel ever with the third-biggest opening weekend of all time. The big-screen adaptation of the first novel in the massively popular young adult trilogy collected $155 million domestically, a figure that was just $3.4 million less than "The Dark Knight" opening in 2008. ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is still #1 with $169.1 million). Audiences gave the movie a CinemaScore of "A."

"The Hunger Games" collected an estimated $19.7 million in midnight screenings alone. Librarians, academics and bookworms of all stripes should note that all of the movies in the top five "all-time" list are based on some sort of printed source material. "Potter," "Dark Knight," "Hunger Games," "Spider-Man 3" ($151 million) and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($142 million) were, of course, all drawn from either novels or long-running comic book characters. "The Hunger Games" made another $59.3 million overseas, which is about on par with the debuts of the opening installments in both the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" franchises.

The next installment in author Suzanne Collins' trilogy, "Catching Fire," will see its film adaptation arrive in November of next year. But "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence will be back in theaters well before that. The 21-year-old Oscar nominee's new horror flick, "House at the End of the Street," is due September 21.

MTV News will exclusively unveil the full trailer for the movie online this Thursday morning. The latest from "Hush" director Mark Tonderai will see Lawrence in a role much different than skilled archer Katniss Everdeen, as she'll play a high school student who gets tangled up with a guy who has very dark secrets.

"The Hunger Games" had an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes at press time, which is exactly the same as last weekend's #1 film, "21 Jump Street." The comedically driven movie version of the earnest late '80s TV drama about cops who went undercover in high schools was #2 this week with $21.3 million, for a total of $71 million. "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," which enjoyed the eighth-highest debut for an animated movie earlier this month, was #3 with $13.1 million and a $177.3 million total.

"John Carter" was #4 with $5 million for a $62.3 million total, and "Act of Valor" rounded out the top five with $2 million for a $66 million total. Although those totals are similar, "John Carter" carried a reported production budget of $250 million while "Valor" was made for $12 million.

Hamas blames fuel shortage for Gaza baby's death

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? A Gaza man said Sunday his 5-month-old baby died two days ago after the generator powering his respirator ran out of fuel, but the report was called into question after it emerged that the timing of the baby's death was misrepresented.

The baby's death ? which was confirmed to The Associated Press by a man identified as the father and a Gaza hospital official ? would have been the first linked to the territory's energy crisis, and the report appeared to be an attempt by Gaza's Hamas rulers to use it to gain sympathy.

However, the AP later learned that news of Mohammed Helou's death first appeared March 4 in the local Arabic-language newspaper Al-Quds, in an article written by a relative of the bereaved family.

The baby's father, Abdul-Halim Helou, said Mohammed was born with a lymphatic disorder and had only a few months to live. He said they miscalculated how much fuel a new generator needed to remove fluids that accumulated in his respiratory system.

"If we were living in a normal country with electricity, I think his chances of living (longer) would have been better," Helou said.

The Al-Quds article contained the same details as the one recounted by the Helou family on Sunday, saying Mohammed died from choking on his own phlegm. The story quoted that father as saying their generator ran out of fuel, causing their son's respirator to stop working and ultimately causing the baby to choke to death.

The fuel crisis was relevant in early March as well, but Hamas apparently missed the report in Al-Quds ? a publication considered loyal to its rival, Fatah ? and Hamas was now trying to recycle the story to capitalize on the family's tragedy.

Confronted by the AP with the newspaper story, the family and Hamas Gaza health official Bassem al-Qadri continued to insist the baby arrived dead at a Gaza City hospital on Friday night.

That timing would highlight the human cost Gaza's 1.6 million residents are paying for 18-hour-a-day blackouts, triggered by a cutoff of Egyptian fuel.

Shortages have caused days-long lines for fuel at gas stations, a sharp reduction in public transportation and families left shivering in poorly built apartments during a wet, cold winter.

More than a year ago, Hamas decided to fire Gaza's only power plant with smuggled fuel from Egypt, rather than pay for more expensive Israeli fuel, as it had done in the past.

Egypt started cutting off the supplies because it was suffering shortages itself and because it wanted to avoid absolving Israel from continuing responsibility for the crowded, impoverished slice of Mediterranean coast. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but still controls its land crossings ? except the one to Egypt.

There are hundreds of smuggling tunnels under the 15-kilometer (9-mile) Gaza-Egypt border, and Hamas raises funds by "taxing" smuggled goods, including fuel.

Israel provided some fuel last week as the crisis worsened.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said he was not surprised by the apparent Hamas attempt to alter details of the baby's death.

"I don't believe this case is at all an isolated incident but rather the tip of the iceberg," he said. "Hamas as an authoritarian regime consistently seeks to hide the truth and manipulate the information that is allowed to get out of Gaza."

State Police Pursue Woman After Fraudulent Cancer Fundraiser

As recently as last night, 27-year-old April Landis was thanking people on Facebook for attending her cancer fundraiser Saturday night. However, by that time, Candy Oliver, with the Steuben County Cancer Association was already having serious doubts about her story. Landis has been telling friends and family for a month that she has a rare brain cancer. Both she and her husband have numerous pictures posted online with shaved heads.

Among the many red flags was the fact the Doctor April named wasn't a cancer doctor. After collecting enough evidence, Candy called and confronted April.

"I told her this is a scam and I know it. She stated stuttering and I told her I've already spoken to police and that she should turn herself in because it's over, then I hung up", said Oliver.

The damage was already done, Saturday's fundraiser was a huge success, over a dozen people even shaved their heads to support the Mother of four in her battle against cancer. After the phone call with Candy, April did call police and turned in several thousand dollars from the fundraiser. Police say she offered no explanation and showed little emotion, now Angola and Indiana State Police fear not all the money is accounted for.

"we're trying to get a tally of how much is still out there, we'll return the checks that we can account for", said Detective Harry Nix with Indiana State Police.

April and her husband did not return our phone calls and no one was home when we stopped at their mobile home to question the about the cancer fundraiser.

April's Father was on Facebook today saying he was as surprised as anyone to hear the news. However, he was maybe not as surprised as Nancy Short. She was recently diagnosed with a very serious form of late stage cancer and spoke directly to April at the benefit, giving her $1,000 in cash. She was devastated after learning the news today.

"I'm angry, I didn't even think to see if she had a port. I don't know how someone can lie about something that's so personal to me and my family", said Short.

It's important to note, the Steuben County Cancer Association had no affiliation with Saturday's benefit, but played a key role in stopping the scam in its tracks. We found postings from April going back to last month talking about her battle with Cancer. Today, those same pages are filled, both with supporters and people livid that someone could take advantage of people in that way.

Police say they will return the checks, but it's up to the court to decide what happens to the cash. They'll recommend the money is given to what it was intended for: fighting cancer. As for April Landis, she is expected to face criminal charges soon from the Steuben County Prosecutor's Office.
